European insurance industry is shifting toward responsible investing

European Insurance Industry 2019: Uncovering Outsourcing Opportunities, shows a significant shift toward responsible investing (RI) in the European insurance sector.

With outsourcing rates increasing, opportunities are growing for external asset managers in the European insurance industry. Managers should ensure that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) integration is at the top of their agenda when engaging with insurers.

Around half of the insurers Cerulli surveyed exclude industries that do not meet their ESG standards, including tobacco and coal, and apply ESG scoring to the remaining investable universe. Other insurers are moving to ESG-focused benchmarks for all the major asset classes. However, integrating ESG factors across the entire investment portfolio is challenging, given the nature of certain asset classes. Cerulli’s survey of European insurers found that 38% of respondents integrate ESG considerations only in certain asset classes.

Insurance claims for latest California wildfires top $9 billion

<div>Insurance claims for latest California wildfires top $9 billion</div>
Insurance claims from the recent spate of California wildfires, including one ranked as the most deadly and destructive in state history, have topped $9 billion and are expected to grow, the state insurance commissioner reported on Wednesday.

The claims, so far, fall short of the record $12 billion in wildfire-related insured losses sustained in California in 2017, most of that from more than a dozen blazes that swept a large swath of wine country north of San Francisco Bay, killing 46 people.
This year, the Camp Fire that erupted on Nov. 8 has accounted for the bulk of the claims, just over $7 billion of the total. The wind-driven blaze quickly incinerated most of the Sierra foothills town of Paradise, about 175 miles (280 km) north of San Francisco, destroying 18,500 homes and businesses and killing 86 people.

The casualty toll stands as the greatest loss of life from a single wildfire on record in California, and the highest from any U.S. wildfire during the past century.

Kim Kardashian's insurance company is suing her former bodyguard for $6 million over Paris robbery.

Kim Kardashian's insurance company is suing her former bodyguard for $6 million over Paris robbery.
The insurance company that paid Kim Kardashian West after she was robbed of millions of dollars' worth of jewelry in Paris two years ago is suing her former bodyguard.

American International Group, also known as AIG, filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Delaware against Pascal Duvier and his company Protect Security seeking $6.1 million, court documents show.
The insurance company claims Duvier and the security firm "negligently, carelessly, and/or recklessly performed their protection, security, monitoring, inspection, and/or surveying of" Kardashian West and the private apartment where she was staying for Paris Fashion Week in October 2016, according to the complaint.
In the document, AIG says the defendants left Kardashian West alone in her room and failed to address and correct several security breaches, including a missing or broken lock, a malfunctioning intercom and the lack of closed circuit television in the building. The company also says the building's concierge "did not have any security training and/or background."
